 A hotel in China is facing a lot of criticism because it is using endangered red pandas to wake up guests. The hotel, Lehe Ledu Liangjiang Holiday Hotel, is located in a village area near the city of Chongqing.

Every morning, red pandas are brought to the hotel guests to wake them up.

In the pictures and videos that are spreading all over social media, it is seen that the red pandas are mixing with small children and staying very close to them. Not only that, they are even sitting on the guests’ beds.

To provide this special service to the guests, the hotel charged around Rs 24,160 (or 2,000 Yuan) per night. According to Zivozy, this whole thing has become very fun and joyful.

What Happened After the Videos Went Viral?

Shortly after the videos went viral, the Chongqing Forestry Bureau told the hotel to send the wild animals back to their proper place. They also told the hotel to stop such activities.

They also said that an investigation team had been sent to the hotel, and if needed, the hotel might face legal action or fines.

What Is the Hotel Saying?

The hotel said they borrowed the red pandas from a zoo. Every morning at 9:30 AM, one hotel staff member takes a red panda to the guests’ rooms. The panda walks around freely there, and sometimes it even climbs onto the guests' beds.

The hotel authorities also said that there is always one person with the panda, and the pandas have been vaccinated.

Guests can spend some time with the panda as they wish. But it depends completely on the panda’s mood—how it reacts. Usually, the visit lasts at least a few minutes.

Why Is This So Controversial?

According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), currently, there are only about 10,000 red pandas left in the world. In China, they are known as a second-class protected animal, and they are also listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List.

These animals mainly live in the Eastern Himalayas, but because of deforestation, their habitat is slowly disappearing.Red pandas often get accidentally caught in traps that are set for other animals. And sometimes they fall into traps that were set for different animals.

Also, their fur is very popular, and because of that, they are illegally hunted for it.
