Why Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan Nuclear Sites Matter | Zivozy News
The United States has attacked three of Iran’s major nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. These nuclear sites are considered critical to Iran’s atomic program. Let’s look at why these locations are so important.
🔶 Fordow: A Deep Underground Enrichment Site
Fordow is one of Iran’s most vital uranium enrichment plants. Located about 96 kilometers south of Tehran, in the city of Qom, this site lies deep under mountainous terrain. Its location makes it extremely difficult to damage through airstrikes.
According to a report from the Institute for Science and International Security, Fordow has a complex network of underground tunnels. There are two main tunnels, along with several smaller ones. The underground facility is accessible through six different entrances, which adds to its security.
🔶 Natanz: Iran’s Hidden Enrichment Facility
Natanz was secretly built in 2002, although it was soon discovered. By 2007, it became operational. This site is specifically known for uranium enrichment.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently confirmed that uranium enrichment is actively taking place at Natanz. Enrichment equipment is stored underground to avoid surveillance or attack. The site was originally designed to house more than 50,000 centrifuges — machines that enrich uranium — according to early reports by the Institute for Science and International Security.
🔶 Isfahan: Iran’s Largest Nuclear Research Center
Isfahan is located in central Iran, south of Tehran. It hosts the country’s largest nuclear research center, where uranium conversion activities are conducted.
Back in the 1980s, Iran and China signed an agreement, leading to the installation of research reactors in Isfahan. Later, in 1992, China supplied certain nuclear materials under a bilateral deal. The Isfahan Nuclear Technology Center (INTC) was established here.
Isfahan is not only important for nuclear reasons but also for its strategic role in defense. The city is home to Iran’s drone and ballistic missile production facilities.
